Horticulture Tip of the Month: Negative Ion Generators

“Please list the advantages and disadvantages of negative ion generators.”
- S.H., Des Plaines, Illinois

Negative Ion Generators flood the air with negative ions, or molecules with a negative electrical charge. Negative ions transfer their negative charge to positively charged solid particles, neutralizing them. Without electrical charge, they drop out of the air. Odors and dust as well as mold spores, bacteria and other pollutants are removed from the air and deposited near the ion fountain. Plants grow faster and humans have reduced tensions and increased attentiveness in a negative ion-filled environment.

Negative ion generators are noise-free and use minute amounts of electricity. When using negative ion generators without collector plates, place newspaper around the machine. It will collect a lot of the pollutants and it can be discarded when it gets filthy.
